Allergen Information
The Galley Restaurant | 41 Fore Street, Topsham, Exeter, Devon EX3 0HU | [email protected] | 01392 876078
If you have a severe allergy, please tell us before you visit — and again when you arrive. Our kitchen handles all 14 major allergens. We take every allergen request seriously, but we cannot guarantee that any dish is completely free from cross-contamination. Please speak to a member of the team before ordering.
Our kitchen
The Galley Restaurant is a small, busy seafood restaurant. Our menu is written each morning by Head Chef based on what has landed at Brixham and Newlyn markets. Because the menu changes daily and dishes are prepared to order, allergen information is managed on the day rather than printed in advance.
All 14 of the major allergens listed under UK food law are handled in our kitchen. Our team know the menu in detail — please ask, and they will go through the current dishes with you. If you have a serious allergy, tell us when you book so the kitchen can plan ahead and accommodate.
The 14 major allergens
Under UK food information regulations, food businesses are required to declare the following 14 allergens when they are used as an ingredient in a dish.
What to expect from our kitchen
Cross-contamination
All dishes are prepared in a kitchen that handles nuts, shellfish, gluten, and dairy every service. Even with careful preparation, we cannot guarantee a complete absence of trace allergens in any dish. If you have a life-threatening allergy, please speak with us before you visit so we can be honest with you about whether we can accommodate you safely that day.
Gluten
Flour is used throughout the kitchen, dishes can be adapted gluten free with advance notice, subject to availability and dietary requirements. On the menu, dishes that can be adapted are marked GFA. Please tell us at the time of booking and again when you arrive, and we will endeavour to meet your dietary requirements.
Vegan and vegetarian
Many dishes can be made vegan on request (marked VEA on the menu). Our menu is predominantly fish and seafood, but we always have vegetarian options, and the kitchen will put together a vegan dish where it can. Please tell us when you book.
Fish and shellfish
As a seafood restaurant, fish and shellfish are at the heart of what we do. They are handled throughout the kitchen throughout every service. If you have a fish or shellfish allergy, please call us before booking — we will tell you honestly what is on the menu that day and whether there are suitable options.
Dairy
Butter, cream, and cheese are used extensively across the menu. Dairy-free adaptations are possible for some dishes — please let us know when you book.
Dietary tags on the menu
Every dish on the menu is tagged to show how it is served as standard, and what adaptations are available on request. The tags are:
- V — Vegetarian
- VE — Vegan
- GF — Gluten free as served
- GFA — Gluten free available on request
- VEA — Vegan available on request
- N — Contains nuts
Ask your server if you would like a dish adapted. Tags indicate how a dish is served as standard — many dishes can be adjusted with notice.
Tell us before you visit
The single most effective thing you can do is tell us about your allergy or intolerance when you make your reservation. This gives the kitchen time to prepare and allows us to advise you honestly about the menu for that service.
Please also tell a member of the team again when you arrive. On a busy service, one mention is easy to miss. We would rather hear it twice.
