Private Dining in Devon, The Galley Restaurant, Topsham

A table set aside, on the estuary. For the milestones, the celebrations, and the dinners that warrant somewhere of their own. Two floors, two private settings — up to 26 covers downstairs, 16 upstairs — dining from the à la carte menu in a room of your own. No room-hire charge; a £20 per person deposit holds the booking. The Galley Restaurant is four miles from Exeter city centre and one of Devon's most formally recognised independent restaurants — Michelin Plaque 2026, AA 1 Rosette, 36 years on the Exe Estuary.

An evening here

Cooking that changes daily, in a room that holds the river.

Your party dines from the à la carte menu — the same daily-changing menu as the restaurant, built by Head Chef Dan Kavanagh around the day's best fish. The dining room sits a flight of stairs above Fore Street, looking out onto the Exe at high tide. The team that looks after your guests is the same team that has held Michelin recognition here every year since 2021 — now the Plaque, plus the AA 1 Rosette this year.

It's the kind of evening that doesn't feel like a venue hire. It feels like our seafood restaurant near Exeter — one of Devon's most awarded (see the full seafood restaurant in Devon page) — paused for one table, with fine dining for private events built around the occasion. See special occasion dining at The Galley for anniversaries, birthdays and proposals in the main dining room.

Two floors

The space that fits the party.

An intimate dozen upstairs, or a longer table for sixteen below — with room for twenty-six on the lower floor when it's set as separate tables.

Lower ground floor

The main dining room

Sixteen sit around one table — the window table extended into a T — for a single seated party. Set as separate tables, the same room takes up to twenty-six (the format we used for the fish-and-chip evening). The pass stays open; the room feels like the restaurant on a good night, paused for one party.

The estuary room

A private floor above the kitchen, looking out over the Exe with the Haldon Hills in the distance. Twelve sit around one table for an intimate evening; for sixteen we set the floor as two tables of eight (a step between the front and back of the room means we can't put a single long table the full length). Ideal for a milestone birthday, a small rehearsal dinner, or a long lunch with the river outside the window.

We recommend at least three months in advance for weekend events — Friday and Saturday evenings book earliest. Weekday private dining has more flexibility. Get in touch and we will confirm availability and come back within one working day.

Can you accommodate dietary requirements for private events?

Yes. The kitchen uses gluten-free flour throughout, and most dishes can be adapted. Many can be made vegan on request. Dietary requirements should be confirmed when enquiring, and the menu will be written around them. The kitchen handles nuts, shellfish, gluten, and dairy — a complete absence of trace ingredients cannot be guaranteed.

Yes. For corporate events, The Galley can invoice rather than take card payment. A private events manager runs the evening, and a specific run-of-show can be accommodated. The restaurant is four miles from Exeter city centre, twelve minutes by train from Exeter Central on the Avocet Line.
