What makes us different

A fish restaurant, rewritten daily.

Most restaurants that describe themselves as seafood restaurants are general menus with fish on them. The Galley is a fish and seafood restaurant in the specific sense: the menu is built around what the day-boats landed, rewritten each morning after a call to Brixham Harbour and Newlyn Fish Market. If the weather kept the boats in, the menu changes. Nothing is on the plate that wasn't chosen by the chef that morning.

Head Chef Dan Kavanagh has spent twenty years in kitchens — from Michelin dining rooms to neighbourhood restaurants across Devon and Manchester — and holds an AA Rosette of his own. The cooking reflects that background: clean, precise, built around the fish rather than around it. A full fine dining experience near Exeter, in a setting that doesn't feel formal.

Sourcing

How we source the catch.

The fish is day-caught from Brixham Harbour and Newlyn Fish Market — two of the most productive fish markets on the South West coast. Brixham is the UK's largest fish market by value; Newlyn supplies The Galley on days when the Brixham catch is sold out or the species we want isn't in. The result is fish that is often hours out of the water when it reaches the plate.

Shellfish: St Austell rope-grown mussels from Fowey. Cornish hand-picked crab from day-boats working the Channel. Everything else — beef from Good Game in Devon, pork from Topsham Butchers a few doors up the street, vegetables from Topsham Green Grocers — comes from producers within an hour of the door. More on how we source our fish and the rest of the menu.
